In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Genesis 1:1–2

Begin reading Genesis 1

Read it simply, or stop where a verse is hard and dig in: the notes open from the phrases they explain.

Painted-paper scene: great wings made of golden light, an eagle's wings with long fingered feathers but no head or body, hover low over dark, still waters. A shaft of first light falls from a gap in the night sky to one side. Faint hills lie on the horizon and a few stars shine overhead.
The Spirit of God hovering over the surface of the waters (1:2), like an eagle over its young (Deuteronomy 32:11).
