The Biblical World

The lands of the Bible

From the whole Earth down to the hills of Canaan: where the Bible's story happens, and where those places are today. It is a guide for reading, not a survey. Borders and coastlines are approximate, and where today's borders are disputed they are drawn dashed, with the names the areas are commonly known by.

A painted map of the lands of the Bible, from Spain in the west to Persia in the east, and from the Black Sea to Arabia and the upper Nile, with the Mediterranean at its centre.
The Bible's world, painted from NOAA's ETOPO 2022 relief. Made with Natural Earth.

The world at moments in the story

The nations

Before dated time

Genesis 10 traces the nations to Noah's sons Shem, Ham and Japheth, by their clans, languages and lands: from them “the nations of the earth spread out after the flood” (10:32). “From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands,” Paul told the people of Athens (Acts 17:22, 26). These are the nations God promised to bless through Abram: “all the families of the earth will be blessed through you” (12:3). Like the chapter, the map gives no dates, and many of its names can be placed only roughly.

In the days of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob

2167–1805 BC (Early Exodus); 1990–1609 BC (Late Exodus)

Abram (later Abraham) set out from Ur of the Chaldeans with his father Terah for the land of Canaan, but they settled in Harran (11:31). From there he went on to Canaan, as the LORD had told him: “go to the land I will show you” (12:1, 4–5). There the LORD promised to give the land to his offspring (12:7). Abraham, Isaac and Jacob lived in it as foreigners (23:4; 26:3; 28:4). The roads are drawn only roughly.

When Joseph ruled in Egypt

1899–1805 BC (Early Exodus); 1722–1609 BC (Late Exodus)

Joseph's brothers sold him to traders bound for Egypt (37:28). There he came to rule the land under Pharaoh, Egypt's king (41:41–46). When famine brought his brothers to Egypt for grain, he told them, “it was not you who sent me here, but God” (42:3–5; 45:8). He brought his father Jacob, also called Israel, and the whole family to live in Goshen, in Egypt (45:9–13; 46:1–7; 47:27). When Jacob died, his sons carried him back to Canaan to be buried, as he had asked (49:29–32; 50:12–13).

At the Exodus

1447–1406 BC (Early Exodus); 1270–1210 BC (Late Exodus)

The LORD brought Israel out of Egypt and through the sea on dry ground (Exodus 14:21–22). At Mount Sinai he told them, “I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself” (Exodus 19:1–4). Because of their unfaithfulness they spent forty years in the wilderness, before they camped across the Jordan from Jericho (Numbers 14:33–34; 22:1).

When Israel entered Canaan, and in the judges’ days

1407–1050 BC (Early Exodus); 1230–1050 BC (Late Exodus)

The LORD brought Israel across the Jordan under Joshua, and gave them the land he had sworn to give their fathers (Joshua 3:14–17; 21:43). In the judges’ days Israel forsook the LORD, and he gave them into the hands of the enemies around them (Judges 2:12–14). Then “the LORD raised up judges, who saved them” (Judges 2:16).

In David and Solomon’s kingdom

1053–930 BC (Early Exodus); 1053–930 BC (Late Exodus)

The LORD chose David, a son of Jesse of Bethlehem, to be king in Saul’s place (1 Samuel 16:1, 13). In his wars “the LORD made David victorious wherever he went” (2 Samuel 8:6). His son Solomon built the house of the LORD, the temple, in Jerusalem (1 Kings 2:12; 3:1; 6:1–2, 14).

When the kingdom divided

931–586 BC (Early Exodus); 931–586 BC (Late Exodus)

The LORD tore the kingdom from Solomon’s hand: after him, ten tribes became Israel, and Judah kept David’s line in Jerusalem (1 Kings 11:31–36; 12:15–20). Israel sinned against the LORD and worshipped other gods, so he removed them from his presence into exile in Assyria (2 Kings 17:6–7, 18). When Assyria came against Jerusalem, the angel of the LORD struck down its army, as the LORD had promised (2 Kings 19:32–36).

At the exile to Babylon

586–538 BC (Early Exodus); 586–538 BC (Late Exodus)

Judah did evil in the LORD’s sight, and in his anger he banished them from his presence (2 Kings 21:10–15; 24:3–4, 19–20). Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, burned Jerusalem and carried its people into exile in Babylon, in today’s Iraq (2 Kings 24:15–16; 25:8–11). Among the exiles, Ezekiel the priest saw “visions of God” by the River Kebar, “in the land of the Chaldeans” (Ezekiel 1:1–3).

At the return from exile

538–424 BC (Early Exodus); 538–424 BC (Late Exodus)

The LORD stirred the spirit of Cyrus, king of Persia, to let the exiles from Judah go home and build the house of the LORD, his temple, in Jerusalem (Ezra 1:1–5; 3:10). Later Ezra brought more of them back, and Nehemiah came to rebuild the city’s wall (Ezra 7:6–9; Nehemiah 2:5, 17). The Persian Empire reached “from India to Cush”, from today’s Pakistan to Sudan (Esther 1:1).

In Jesus’s ministry

7 BC – AD 36 (Early Exodus); 7 BC – AD 36 (Late Exodus)

Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, in the time of King Herod (Matthew 2:1). In Galilee he proclaimed God's good news, calling people to repent and believe it (Mark 1:14–15). He was crucified near Jerusalem, and rose again (Mark 10:33–34; John 19:20; Mark 16:6).

As the church spread

AD 29–96 (Early Exodus); AD 29–96 (Late Exodus)

Before he was taken up to heaven, Jesus told the apostles he had chosen, “You will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:2, 8). Saul, also called Paul, carried the good news about Jesus across Asia Minor, today’s Turkey, and into Greece (Acts 13:9; chapters 13–20). He came to Rome itself as a prisoner (Acts 28:16–17).
